Pelosi of all people is concerned about ‘ethics’ and term limits for the Supreme Court

Share
Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has thoughts about term limits and ethical standards for the Supreme Court. Given her long, unethical history in government, she should keep them to herself.

“There certainly should be — and if nothing else, there should be some ethical rules that would be followed,” Pelosi said. “I had one justice tell me he thought the other justices were people of integrity, like a Clarence Thomas; I’m like ‘get out of here.’” She also said that there “certainly should be term limits” for Supreme Court justices, and she implied that expanding the Supreme Court with liberal justices should also be on the table.

Pelosi calling for ethical rules and attacking the integrity of Thomas is laughable, given her own track record. She has used her position in Congress to benefit her and her husband’s stock portfolios for decades and has repeatedly slow-walked bills at the behest of companies that she and her husband invest in. And, of course, Pelosi repeatedly swatted down attempts to ban members of Congress from trading stocks.

Pelosi is arguably an even bigger hypocrite when it comes to term limits. Pelosi has been in Congress since 1987, with this year marking her 36th in the House of Representatives. That means she has been a member of Congress longer than any current justice has been on the Supreme Court, with Thomas joining in 1991. Pelosi was in her 18th year in the House when the next longest-tenured justice, Chief Justice John Roberts, joined the court. Pelosi was a member of Democratic House leadership longer than eight of the nine justices have been on the Supreme Court.

All of this is nothing more than a left-wing tantrum over the fact that Democrats cannot force their agenda on the country through the Supreme Court. The “ethical” issues that Pelosi is referring to are nothing more than left-wing hit pieces from an outlet funded by liberal dark money donors. The concerns about term limits are because they want to end the terms of conservative justices as quickly as possible.

The fact that Pelosi is being trotted out to make these arguments gives the whole partisan game away, not that Democrats have been subtle about it to this point. Pelosi is a hyperpartisan hypocrite, much of whose political career has been about enriching herself and empowering Democrats at the expense of the country. Anyone humoring her arguments is as partisan and unserious as she is.
